Leap into Spring
Spring has officially sprung in New Orleans! The weather is warming up, and we have finally dusted off the remaining glitter vestiges from Mardi Gras and started looking forward to the start of Crawfish (and Festival) Season! Here are the events we are excited about in March
March 4-6: Dead Man Walking at the New Orleans Opera. A modern classic since its premiere in 2000, Dead Man Walking is the story of a nun’s journey as the spiritual advis0r of a convicted murderer on death row. From the shocking opening scene to the searing finale, this opera changes everyone who encounters it. Dead Man Walking, composed by Jake Heggie with libretto by Terrence McNally, is based on Sister Helen Prejean’s 1993 account of her work on death row at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. March 18th: Fetes Fest. A fundraiser for the John Besh Foundation, Fetes Fest is an unparalleled night of food, drinks, and fun at The Civic featuring world-renowned chefs and musicians! March 19-20th: Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival. Presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, the Congo Square Rhythms Festival features live music, food, handmade crafts (often with Afro-centric themes) and other aspects of African and African American culture. March 26: Crescent City Classic. The 10-kilometer course (6.2 miles) begins in Downtown New Orleans in front of the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, runs participants through the French Quarter, and then all the way up beautiful Esplanade Avenue to New Orleans City Park. March 30-April 3: Tennessee Williams Literary Festival. The annual Tennessee Williams Literary Festival is named after the world-famous playwright who made New Orleans his home during one of the most creative periods in his life. This year’s event, hosted at venues across the city, features some incredible speakers, contests and special celebratory events. For more information, please go here.
April 1-2: Hogs for the Cause. The nation’s premier fundraiser for children with pediatric brain cancer and their families, Hogs for the Cause brings together some of New Orleans’ top musicians, along with 80 or more teams of amateur and professional barbecue competitors for the “High on the Hog” Cook-Off competitions. The BBQers will compete for the title of Louisiana Pork Champion. For more information, please go here.
